L’Esercito del Ducato di Württemberg della Guerra dei Sette Anni, 1756–1763
Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg was offered a subsidy to provide 6,000 men for service alongside the armata francese in times of war. When war came in 1757 only 3,000 men were ready, e the ranks had to be filled quickly con unreliable recruits of Protestant faith.
Ten battaglioni di fanteria e tre converged battaglioni di granatieri eventually joined l’armata austriaca, e fought at the Battle of Leuthen alongside the contingent bavarese, where they bore the brunt of the attack prussiano. In 1759, the promised 15 battaglioni transferred to Broglie’s armata francese operating in the Rhineland. Under a similar financial agreement, 17 battaglioni served nell’armata austriaca again in 1760.
Württemberg reggimenti di fanteria could easily be confused con truppe nemichi, because of their uniformi e mitrie di granatieri in stile prussiano. Carl Eugen’s fancy for things prussiani apparently had to do con his upbringing at the court of King Frederick II. of Prussia. In 1744, Carl Eugen was introduced to Princess Elisabeth Friederike Sophie von Brandenburgo-Bayreuth, daughter of Margrave Friedrich von Brandenburgo-Bayreuth, e niece of King Frederick the Great of Prussia, whom he fell in love with, e married in 1748.
