Fanteria Turca della Prima Guerra Mondiale, 1916–1918
Recensione dei Figurini Old Contemptibles di 20 mm
Soldatini turchi in fleece cap, tirante una mitragliatrice media. The Old Contemptibles range includes many armies, e troop types which have not been seen in this scale before. The troops have a lot of charm e character. Unfortunately, the standing e mounted soldiers are much shorter than Airfix, e Revell soldatini plastici of the same period. Kneeling fanteria, mitraglieri, e seated gun crew seem to be taller, e they would fit in quite well con existing ranges of soldatini plastici. Deployed in their own units, these soldatini can serve on the same battlefield con battaglioni made up of the taller plastic troops. One trick is to mount them on thicker bases, making them appear taller than they are.

Lawrence of Arabia
The Old Contemptible range includes truppe britanniche, Indian, Australian, turche, Egyptian, Arab, ed irregolari of the Arab Revolt. If you have seen the movie, you may have been tempted to recreate this fascinating campaign in miniature, e here is your chance to do it. Model railroad track ed equipaggiamento, aircraft, ed autoblindi from other manufacturers can be used to set the scene.
Arab regolari on the left, granatiere turco (elmetto 1916) on the right. In the center is an Airfix soldatini francese, added for scale reference.
Valutazione
- Excellent choice of subject. The prima guerra mondiale period has not received much attention from manufacturers of military miniatures. The Old Contemptibles range covers most armies involved in the war. soldatini are available individually, but the manufacturer offers the much more attractive discount packs of fanteria battalion, cavalleria e camelry regimental strength. These ready made units are well balanced fighting forces, con the proper mix of troops e support weapons.
- Nicely detailed soldatini. Faces, hands, folds in the clothing, pouches, canteens, weapons, belts, straps, headdress, e horse furniture are well sculpted, ed easy to paint.
- Mounted officers fit into the saddle very well.
- The horses are correctly proportioned, e very attractive. The gait is not entirely correct, but that’s hardly noticeable at a slow walk. The horses have seperate heads which need to be glued on. The seam is conveniently hidden beneath ammo pouches o straps.
- Good casting quality, con minimal mold lines. We found almost no flash on the men, ed only a little of it between the horses’ legs. Minimal clean up was required to prepare the soldatini for painting. Mounted soldatini e some dell’ufficiali have separate right arms, e there may be a choice of weapons included in the set. This is a great idea, providing more variety of poses. Assembly can
be a little tricky at times, a hole in the upper arm, e small gaps between the arm e the shoulder need to be filled con putty.
- The casting sprues on the underside of the base had been trimmed off, e filed flat, requiring no additional work to make the soldatini stand up straight. Riders still had sprues attached between their feet, e these were easily trimmed off con a sharp knife. Some riders carry a blanket roll on the sprue, which needs to be trimmed, ed attached behind the saddle.
- The soldatini are cast in lead free pewter, eliminating the danger of lead poisoning. The soldatini are very sturdy, we encountered no broken o badly bent weapons. On the other hand, conversion work will be more difficult, requiring heavier tools than would be needed for plastic o soft metal figure conversions.
- Typical wargaming poses are used, e they are very attractive. The difference between early, e late war battalion packs is sometimes only in the headgear. Soldiers from earlier periods could be mixed in con the later types to add variety. Doing so would almost completely eliminate the need for conversions.
- The range is practically complete, e giocatori wargame should be able to raise entire armies for their favorite game system.
- Incompatibile con Airfix, e Revell figure sets. Kneeling fanteria, mitraglieri, e gun crew would be compatibile con soldatini plastici, but the standing e mounted soldatini are noticeably shorter. This is not a problem in the case dell’armata turca ed its opponents, because there are no soldatini plastici covering that part of the Great War yet. It is an issue to consider if Old Contemptibles soldatini are to be used alongside Airfix e Revell troops on the western front. The Arab Revolt range is unique in this scale.
Utilizzo Storico
- Sinai-Palestine, 1916-1918
- Mesopotamia, 1916-1918
The Old Contemptibles range of true 20 mm scale soldatini covers the armies fighting in Francia, Palestine, e Mesopotamia in much detail. Fanteria, cavalleria, camelry, support weapons, ed artiglieria are available to allow complete simulation of the conflict. Anyone interested in campaigning con o against l’armata turca in Palestine o Mesopotamia is well advised to consider this range. Incompatibility con Airfix e Revell soldatini plastici is not an important issue, because it seems rather unlikely that the plastic figure manufacturers will ever give this particular conflict the amount of attention it deserves. Old Contemptibles are ready to fight now.
