In 1942, tank brigades used a mixture of carri armati leggeri, medi, e pesanti, depending on what was available to them. As production of the T-34 increased, the brigades became more homogeneous. For wargaming purposes, the following combinations of battaglioni di carri may be used:

  • 1 battaglione leggero, 1 battaglione medio e 1 battaglione pesante
  • 1 battgalione leggero e 2 battaglioni medi
  • 2 battaglione medio e 1 battaglione pesante
  • 3 battaglioni medi, of which one o more may be using carri armati T-34/85.

Distant Action Raiders

L’armata sovietica differentiated certain tactical groups of carri armati:

  • Carri armati D.D. (T-35, T-28, KV-1, KV-85, IS) - Distant Action Raiding Tanks
  • Carri armati N.P.P. (BT, T-46, T-34, etc.) - "Cavalleria" Breakthrough e Flanking Tanks
  • Carri armati D.P.P. (T-18, T-24, T-26, T-46, etc.) - carro d’appoggio fanteria

D.D. tanks operated without fanteria support, e this explains why some KV-1 tanks counter-attacked e penetrated deeply behind German lines. As the war progressed, it was found that the T-35 was a practical D.P.P. tank, e the BT made a good Recce tank. Accordingly, these vehicle changed roles. The T-46 is a T-26 con BT wheels e tracks.
