Kaiserliche Marineinfanterie 1871–1918
Seebataillon Marines of the Imperial German Navy
At the beginning of the guerra franco-prussiana the North German Navy had one battalion of Marines stationed at Kiel. The Seebataillon had been established on 13 maggio 1852, e by 1870 its strength had increased to 22 officers e 680 men in cinque marine fanteria companies. When the German Empire was established in 1871, the Navy of the North German Federation became the Imperial German Navy. The strength of the Seebataillon was increased to six companies. On 1 ottobre 1886 the Seebataillon was split into due half-battaglioni, stationed at Kiel e Wilhelmshaven. Battalion Headquarters remained con the Io Halbbataillon at Kiel. The IIo Halbbataillon at Wilhelmshaven was commanded by the most senior company commander there. By Imperial Order of 12 marzo 1889 both half-battaglioni were increased to battaglioni di fanteria da marina con quattro compagnie each. The III. Seebataillon was raised on 03 dicembre 1897 from Detachments of Io Seebataillon (1a e 2a Compagnia) e IIo Seebataillon (3a e 4a Compagnia), ed it was deployed to the German Protectorate of Kiautschou in China.

German marines wore a light khaki tropical uniform con white shoulder-boards, black jackboots e leather equipaggiamento. The shoulder-boards carried the imperial crown above crossed anchors e the unit number in roman numerals. On campaign, the shakò was replaced by a white elmo pith con a large silver badge depicting the imperial eagle on an anchor, ed a small national cockade below the badge. The marines carried the fanteria knapsack con the blanket-roll strapped to the outside of it. German Jäger o Landsturm fanteria soldatini may be used to represent imperial German marines in blu di prussia dress uniforms.
On 01 aprile 1958 the German Bundesmarine federal navy raised a Marine-Pionierbataillon at Wilhelmshaven-Sengwarden which was designated Seebataillon in 1959, e disbanded at Borkum on 31.12.1964.
