Schützenpanzer kurz (Hotchkiss)

SPz kurz (20 mm BMK)

In 1958, the German Bundeswehr adopted a new TO&E, called Heeresstruktur 2, which divided the available forces into 12 Divisions of 3 Brigades each. Panzerdivisions consisted of 2 tank e 1 armoured o fanteria meccanizzata brigade; Panzergrenadierdivisions had 2 brigades fanteria armoured, meccanizzata o motorizzata e 1 tank brigade. The Bundeswehr at the time was short of veicoli da combattimento della fanteria (IFV) to mount its Panzergrenadiers. Tre types of battaglioni di Panzergrenadier existed: armoured PzGrenBtl (SPz) using the Swiss SPz lang (long) HS 30 con its powerful 20 mm Autocannon, PzGrenBtl meccanizzato (MTW) using the American M 113 APC, e PzGrenBtl motorizzato (mot) using 1.5 ton UNIMOG trucks.

To improve the firepower of meccanizzata e motorizzata Panzergrenadier units, the Bundeswehr ordered an upgraded version of the veicolo da combattimento della fanteria Hotchkiss TT 6 francese. The vehicle received a longer chassis con one additional road wheel, e the 20 mm Autocannon in torretta of the HS 30. SPz kurz (Halbgruppe und Funk) - veicolo da combattimento della fanteria short (Halfsquad e Radio) - was deployed in dedicated fire support Gun Platoons of PzGrenBtl (MTW) e PzGrenBtl (mot). In addition, SPz kurz served as an armoured reconnaissance vehicle in the PzAufklBtl (battaglioni recon armoured), until replaced by Luchs (Lynx) autoblindo amphibian a 8 ruote.
