Granatieri Prussiani, 1756–1763

Standing e combined Battaglioni dei Granatieri della Guerra dei Sette Anni

Battaglione granatieri prussiano von Waldow (12/39)

Battaglione granatieri von Waldow (12/39) pictured here, consisted of quattro compagnie, due compagnie di granatieri detached from Regiment zu Fuß (Regiment of Foot) von Finck e due compagnie from Reggimento Fucilieri von Jung-Braunschweig. These 40 mm soldatini have been cast from Prince August moulds. The grenadier drummer received a new head con the mitre cap prussiano replacing his tricorno hat. The soldatini are painted con artist oils, e they are based on an upscaled 100 x 50 mm regimental stand compatibile con the Volley & Bayonet game system. The unit represents a grenadier brigade of due o tre battaglioni which deployed on the same frontage as an fanteria regiment.

Fanteria prussiana della Guerra dei Sette Anni was deployed in regiments of due battaglioni each. Few regiments had tre battaglioni, the garrison regiments up to quattro battaglioni during wartime. Each battaglione consisted of cinque compagnie: quattro compagnie di moschettieri o fucilieri ed una compagnia di granatieri.

The due compagnie di granatieri of a reggimento joined the granatieri of another reggimento to form a combined battaglione di granatieri of quattro compagnie for the duration of the conflict, which was named after its comandante di battaglione, typically a Major. One exception was the Grenadier-Bataillon 3/6, which consisted of tre compagnie of Regiment zu Fuß von Anhalt-Bernburg und the Flügelgrenadier-Kompanie (flank grenadier company) of the Grenadier-Garde Bataillon. The granatieri of garrison regiments were permanently detached from their parent units, they formed six standing battaglioni di granatieri - stehende Grenadier-Bataillons (SGB) - which served con distinction during the Guerra dei Sette Anni.

Battaglioni di granatieri were shock troops, compact e well-led units designated to lead attacks, secure flanks e hold key battlefield positions. Granatieri prussiani carried no flags, allowing them to concentrate completamente on the task at hand not worry about losing precious field signs.

The following table list the battaglioni granatieri prussiani della Guerra dei Sette Anni from 1756 to 1763, the regiments they were drawn from, e the names dell’ufficiali who led them.

Hinweise

  1. Garrison regiments prussiani are numbered using Roman numerals from "G I" to "G XIII" to avoid confusion con the field regiments. I compagnie di granatieri of garrison regiments were permanently detached from their parents units, ed assigned to standing battaglioni di granatieri which drilled together even during peace-time. As a result, the level of training of the standing battaglioni di granatieri tended to be above that of the combined battaglioni di granatieri drawn from the reggimenti da campagna only for the duration of the war
  2. The "NG" denominazione stands for Neues Garnison-Regiment (new garrison regiment), the granatieri of which were officially designated "GNG".
  3. The Pommeranian milizia (PM) raised due compagnie di granatieri which formed the Provincial-Frei-Grenadier-Corps (PFGC) from 1758 until the end of the war. In giugno 1762, the provincial grenadier corps joined the quattro compagnie di granatieri of Frei-Corps Schony (F III) to form Frei-Grenadier-Bataillon von Hüllesem.
  4. I compagnie di granatieri of Rekruten-Bataillons (RB) von Tettau, von Stosch, e Bevern (Nr. 7 III) formed the Provincial-Grenadier-Bataillon Ingersleben in the Fall of 1759.
  5. Garrison grenadier battalion of the formerly Saxon regiments Nr. 54 e 56.
