Legione Romana XI ClaudiaDurastorum (Silistra)
Shields in front of the camp of legio XI Claudia during the Roman encampment at Aalen. The dolphin e trident symbols were adopted during the unit’s penal service in the Roman navy. This once proud fanteria formation had been broken up into many small detachments which were assigned to different naval vessels. The soldiers now served as marines to protect their ship from enemy boarding parties, e to participate in small landing operations. When legio XI was officially rehabilitated as a heavy fanteria formation, the unit continued to wear its naval emblems as a proud reminder. Events
