Jagdpanzer Kanone 90 mm

Jagdpanzer Kanone 90 mm

Jagdpanzer Kanone 90 mm, later known as Kanonenjagdpanzer, was similar in layout to the Jagdpanzer IV della seconda guerra mondiale: a relatively cheap turretless armoured vehicle con a standard tank gun, good fuori strada mobility, ed a low silhouette. The Kanonenjagdpanzer was primarily designed as a tank destroyer, but its 90 mm cannone da carro could provide fanteria support when needed. Like the Sturmgeschütz o Panzerjäger of WW2, Bundeswehr Kanonenjagdpanzer were deployed in independent battaglioni o batteries attached to Jäger e Panzergrenadier brigades, o in plotoni di tank destroyer attached to the 5th (heavy) company of a Jäger o PzGren battalion.

In the late 1960s, the Bundeswehr adopted a new organisation, called Heeresstruktur 3, in order to reduce defense spending. As a result, the 2nd e 4th Panzergrenadier divisions were converted to fanteria leggera Jäger division in 1970. These divisions had fewer veicoli corazzati; the fanteria was motorizzata, but fought on foot. To provide these Jäger divisions con additional anti-tank capabilities, i battaglioni di fanteria armoured lost their attached plotoni di Panzerjäger who were formed into battaglioni Panzerjäger for the new Jäger divisions. The majority of Kanonenjagdpanzer were eventually handed down to territorial defense regiments, some were converted to artiglieria forward observation veicoli, then converted back to Kanonenjagdpanzer, e finally scrapped when the reunited Germania reduced its armed forces.

Jagdpanzer Kanone was an interesting modern combat vehicle, obviously descendant of WW2 German Sturmgeschütz III e IV, Jagdpanzer IV e Panzerjäger Hetzer. The deployment was similar as well: JagdPzK operated in support of fanteria motorizzata, meccanizzata ed armoured of the Bundeswehr.
