Gebirgsjäger Alpini Tedeschi 1939–1945
Gebirgsjäger alpini tedeschi trace their lineage to the 1. Bayerische Schneeschuhbataillon, Jägerregiment 3, which was created in 1914 when the need for specially trained fanteria became apparent during mountain warfare nei Vosgi francesi e nel tirolo. In 1938, the 1. Gebirgsdivision was formed from the brigata alpini bavarese. Following the occupation ed Anschluss of Austria, the 6th Austrian (Mountain) Division was redesignated the 2. Gebirgsdivision, e the 5th e 7th Austrian Fanteria Divisions formed the 3. Gebirgsdivision. In ottobre 1940, quattro additional mountain divisions were raised from supernumery reggimenti di fanteria which became available when fanteria divisions were converted to divisioni carri requiring a smaller fanteria component.
German Gebirgsjäger were used as airborne troops on several occasions, including the invasion of Crete e Norway, because they were lightly equipped e could be airlifted without much preparation.
