Cacciatori a Cavallo della Guardia Imperiale di Napoleone, 1799–1815

I Cacciatori a Cavallo della Guardia imperiale were formed in 1799 from the Guides, the personal life-guard of the 1st Consul e Imperatore Napoléon I. They were among the oldest formations of the guard, belonging to the Old Guard. Only veteran soldiers were admitted to join the Cacciatori a Cavallo, they had to have had a minimum of ten years of military service, tre campaigns, ed an honorable mention for bravery. In addition, the applicant had to be a minimum of 176 cm tall.

From ottobre of 1802, the reggimento consisted of quattro squadrons of 200 men each. In 1805, a squadron of quattro companies of Velites was added, e the squadron of Mamelukes was administratively attached. In 1812, the Velites were disbanded, e the reggimento increased to cinque squadrons. The Cacciatori a Cavallo were increased to eight squadrons in 1813, cinque of which had the status of Old Guard, e the remaining tre belonged to the Young Guard.

The Cacciatori a Cavallo wore a stylish uniform à la hussarde, con green dolman e yellow cords, red cuffs, red pelisse con yellow cords, a Colpack con red bag, red over green plume, e yellow cords. They were armed con hussar carbines, e curved light cavalleria sabres.
