79o (Cameron) & 92o (Gordon) Highland Reggimento Flank Companies, 1808–1815

Recensione dei Figurini ESCI in Scala 1:72

92o (Gordon) Highland Reggimento

Soldatini dei granatieri e fanti delle compagnie del centro del 92o (Gordon) Highland Reggimento. Granatieri were deployed on the right of the line, they wore white plumes on their feather bonnets e wings on the shoulders. The Gordon Highlanders served in the 9th (Highland) Brigade at Waterloo, alongside the 1o (Royal Scots) Reggimento, the 42nd (Royal Highland) Reggimento e the 44o (East Essex) Reggimento. A portabandiera of the 44o Reggimento can be seen in the picture, he stands in the center of a wargaming brigade formation of the 44o e 9o Reggimento.

Highland Brigade

The ESCI Highlanders are not complete. Ufficiali, portabandiere e drummers are missing, which is why these soldiers cannot be deployed in their own separate units. Fortunately, a number of brigade level wargaming rules are available which require that soldatini from several reggimenti be mounted on the same brigade sized stands, providing an excellent opportunity to cover up any lack of figure poses.

The wargaming unit pictured above represents an fanteria brigade of 2,500 men. The stand measures 76 mm x 76 mm e 14 soldatini are mounted on it: portabandiera, drummer, quattro soldatini delle compagnie del centro ed un fante leggero del 44o Reggimento as well as a bagpiper, tre Battalion Company Highlanders, due Highland Granatieri ed one Highland fante leggero from the 92nd Regiment. All soldatini are from ESCI’s Fanteria Britannica set, six Highlanders are on the right of the line e six fanti di linea regolari are on the left flank. In front of the brigade are due fanti leggeri, one each from the 44o e 92o Reggimento. This group of soldatini looks very convincing as a wargaming brigade, ed it’s hardly noticeable that the Highlanders do not have a portabandiera e drummer of their own.

Valutazione

  • Highly detailed soldatini. Kilts, plumes on the bonnet, stockings e gaiters, lace, wings, metal fittings ed armi are well sculpted. The Tartan pattern is deeply engraved e very easy to paint.
  • We liked that some of the soldatini are shown in light gear, after they dropped their knapsacks. Unfortunately, not everyone in the unit has obeyed this order e the resulting mix of soldatini looks a little out of place. We would have preferred a marching figure, con knapsack e shouldered musket, which can be deployed in road column formations somewhere near, but not necessarily on the battlefield.
  • 85% of the Highlanders are in useful wargaming poses. The advancing, firing e loading soldiers are very nice e they may be deployed in very realistic looking wargame units.
  • Good casting quality, very little flash.
  • If fewer poses had been used for the granatieri e Light Company soldatini, it might have been possible to include soldiers from the Battalion Companies as well, offering the entire 79th o 92nd Regiment in one set of soldatini. I battaglioni di fanteria britannica consisted of 10 companies, eight Battalion e due Flank Companies. Accordingly, the historic gamer e collector would have needed a box containing 40 Highlanders, 5 Highland Granatieri e 5 Highlanders of the Light Company. The problem can be corrected by chopping the shoulder wings off the soldatini granatieri, converting them to Battalion Company men.
  • The mixture of Highland fanti e fanti di linea regolari is not very useful, separate sets would have been much better.

Utilizzo Storico

  • Flank Companies of the 79th (Cameron) Highland Regiment 1808-1815
  • Flank Companies of the 92nd (Gordon) Highland Regiment 1808-1815

Conversioni Possibili

  • Battalion Companies of the 79th e 92nd Regiment. A simple conversion, removing the shoulder wings e leaving only a small round tuft attached to the shoulder strap.
  • 79th New York Volunteers 1861. These American Highlanders fought at Bull Run, distinguished themselves at 2nd Bull Run e participated in 59 other engagements. They wore dark blue uniforms con red cuff flaps e collars, edged light blue, o light blue collars con a red collar patch. Kilts e Trews of the Cameron of Erracht Tartan pattern e Glengarry caps were worn on parade. Field service dress included the typical union kepi e sky-blue trousers. The soldatini without knapsacks are suitable for this particular conversion, but the wings have to be removed.
  • 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment, using bonnets from Italeri Highlanders.

Bibliografia

The army pack contains useful poses of Flank Company soldiers della fanteria di linea inglese e Highland. Due o tre of these boxes provide more than enough Highlanders e fanteria di linea flankers to satisfy most giocatori wargame e collezionisti. Fanteria britannica di Revell has the fanteria di linea Battalion Company men to match these soldatini.
